Amala haters will be disgusted by this title, but I write pure facts when I say this meal is truly the champion of the south-west. Amala is greatly misunderstood by consumers and is often compared to its 'light-skinned' adversary - Pounded Yam (not Poundo pls). You know how the antagonist of a superhero movie is always wrong till you understand his ideals? Yeah, this is an 'anti-hero' origin story.
Born of the same entity, one is widely loved and the other - well not so loved. It could it be its complexion, its texture. It could be dislike from widespread criticism or bad PR. Lets see what makes Amala the 'Champion'

ORIGIN
The origin of a character says all you need to know about them - this is what makes or breaks a character. You have to get it right.
Coming from the depths of Osun state in Nigeria around 1050 (I dont know who was keeping track of the years then) during the reign of Sango as Alaafin of Oyo, this bad boy was put together as a part of a trio to please the Alaafin. It is also said that that was the same year Sango breathed fire for the first time ever. Coincidence? think not.
SQUAD
Your favs can't boast of being in a squad just pairs, they don't even have a name. I present to you: Abula: Amala, Ewedu, Gbegiri, Stew. The ultimate combo. You know how we are often told to get teammates that complement our weaknesses, these guys have been above the curve for the longest.
All necessary flavours found in a bowl; Sour from Amala, Sweet from Gbegiri, Spicy and Savoury from Stew and Umami from Ewedu (TheTobiSmith)
SATISFACTION
Gratification derived from the champ is A1, every indicator of a job well done is displayed by these attributes; from the little beads of sweat that appear on the forehead to the sigh of relaxation made through the mouth - it has it all and with very minimal health risks too: low in cholesterol and glycemic index and high water content meaning it can be enjoyed by anyone of any age without worrying too much

The only down side is that it can look unattractive, and to me that's just body shaming.
Amala should be loved for the content it supplies and not for the aesthetics it provides - Akin, 2020
OWAMBE RANKINGS
From the door, the waiters come out carrying trays with curved white ceramic bowls to protect its identity - you know what that means.
I've never seen an 'item 7' without the Champion is all I'm saying.
10/10 - highly recommended for any elite gathering.
This was such an interesting read. Never tried the whole gbegiri with ewedu thing, but amala is one of the few swallows I actually enjoy eating.
This article just made me Sooooo happy!!!! 😀😀 thank you for introducing this beauty to the world!!!!
